Course overview

In this activity, we cover the following topics, including case reviews: diabetic emergencies; alcoholic ketoacidosis; thyroid emergencies; syndrome of inappropriate anti-diuretic hormone (SIADH); and primary adrenal crisis (Addison’s disease). We will also discuss thyroid emergencies in the geriatric patient. After completing this activity, nurses should be able to: discuss assessment and emergency treatment guidelines for older adults with diabetes; describe risk factors and presentation of hypoglycemia in geriatric patients; and recognize symptoms of hypo/hyperthyroidism as well as risk factors and treatment.
