Course overview

In this activity, we cover the following topics, including case reviews: management of sodium imbalances (hyponatremia & hypernatremia); potassium imbalances (hypokalemia & hyperkalemia); calcium imbalances (hypocalcemia & hypercalcemia); chloride imbalances (hypochloremia & hyperchloremia); and magnesium imbalances (hypomagnesemia & hypermagnesemia). This activity also includes slide presentations with audio on body fluid homeostasis and fluid distribution. After completing this activity, nurses should be able to: analyze maintenance of body fluid homeostasis as a dynamic process; evaluate nursing implications in the treatment of hypovolemic and hypervolemic clinical presentations; review major functions of serum electrolytes; and plan and prioritize nursing care for patients presenting with alterations in electrolyte balance.
