Course overview

Although using sterile technique when applying appropriate maintenance techniques is important to reducing the patient’s risk for a catheter- associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI), it is even more important to remove the urinary catheter once it is no longer needed. This course explains when to remove the indwelling urinary catheter and the importance of nurses staying engaged in continuously reviewing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) criteria for discontinuing an indwelling urinary catheter so that urinary catheters are removed as soon as possible. In addition, this module describes the proper procedure for removing an indwelling urinary catheter safely (for example, not clamping drainage tubing and allowing passive deflation of the balloon).
