Course overview

Course Description: This course presents an overview of the relapse prevention model introduced by Marlatt and Gordon, based on social-cognitive psychology. A decision matrix is used to illustrate the immediate and delayed consequences which are considered when an alcoholic decides whether to remain abstinent or resume alcohol use. Immediate determinants as well as covert antecedents of high risk situations are explained. B Both global and specific intervention strategies are presented. The authors conclude by presenting theoretical and practical support for the model. This course is based upon material published in Alcohol Research and Health and is available as an open access article. This course on preventing relapse in alcoholism is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work.
