Managing Patients with Diabetes

Course overview

Diabetes Mellitus is a very common health problem, with about 190 million sufferers world-wide. Genetic factors and environmental influences are responsible for the development of this condition, with obesity and inactivity being a primary cause of diabetes in the developed world. While Physical and Occupational Therapy professionals may not treat diabetes itself, they routinely encounter patients and clients who have diabetes-related complications and comorbidities that require their professional expertise. Because diabetes is linked to inactivity, these professionals are in a unique position to help diabetes patients overcome inactivity to improve their health. This course discusses the types of diabetes, how it impacts patients and clients, and how Physical and Occupational Therapy professionals can help people cope with the disease.
