Course overview

Target Audience: The target audience for this education program is nurses who want to enhance their knowledge of HIV infection, prevention and treatment. Course Overview: HIV infection continues to be a significant public health problem. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 1.2 million people in the United States are living with HIV, and one in eight of them do not know they are infected (CDC, 2016). The state of Florida’s HIV infection incidence is among the highest in the country. Nurses and other healthcare professionals must not only be able to facilitate treatment interventions for HIV infection, but also take an active role in educating the public about prevention. This course provides information about the transmission, risk factors, treatment options, and strategies to prevent HIV infection. It meets the Florida Board of Nursing requirements for HIV/AIDS continuing education. Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to: 1.Explain how HIV is transmitted. 2.Discuss the incidence and prevalence of HIV infection. 3. Identify groups at high-risk for HIV infection. 4.Identify infections common to HIV/AIDS. 5.Explain strategies to prevent HIV infection in healthcare workers and in the general public. 6.Identify treatment options for HIV infection.
