Course overview

Audience: This course is intended to educate Michigan nurses on pain assessment and management. Course Overview: The following program will provide nurses with an overview of the physiology of pain and will differentiate between acute and chronic pain. The focus of the program will be on assessment, as well as on pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities for the patient experiencing pain. Learning Objectives • Define pain. • Differentiate between acute and chronic pain. • Discuss the physiology of pain. • Examine methods of pain assessment with various pain assessment tools. • Become familiar with various treatments for pain, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment modalities. • Discuss the special considerations for pain management in populations such as the elderly, pediatric, and those who are addicts or at risk for addiction. • Provide educational information to patients regarding pain management. • Be aware of barriers to adequate treatment of pain.
