Course overview

This course will identify, the physiological, pharmacological and psychoneurological properties of stimulants. This course will also address the issues of caffeine toxicity, caffeine withdrawal and management of caffeine-related disorders. In addition, this course will describe the mechanisms involved in amphetamine addiction and approachs to management of this condition. Also, this course will identify stimulants and stimulant-like medications used in weight reduction and appetite suppression. Finally, this course will address the recent developments in the field of non-amphetamine stimulants such as orexin agonists using the example of modafinil, the first substance in the class that has been approved by the FDA.
