The liver is the largest organ in the body and it performs several essential services, including digesting food, storing energy, and removing poisons from the body. Early intervention in liver disease is critical in order to minimize organ damage and, if possible, reverse the impact. There are several different causes of liver disease, including inherited disease, viruses, and cancer, and damage can also occur as the result of exposure to poisons, and drug and excessive alcohol use. Understanding the different presentations of liver disease and damage, along with treatment options for each, will ensure that patients have the best possible chance of healing and recovery.
