16517 Childhood Croup

Course overview

Discussion of croup including the epidemiology, etiology, and pathophysiology; the clinical manifestations and diagnosis; and classifications as well as management strategies. Viral croup is a common disease in young children, and is responsible for as many as 15 percent of ED visits related to childhood respiratory disease in the U.S. While the majority of croup episodes are mild, with only one to eight percent of children with croup requiring inpatient treatment, croup can be a life-threatening disease. Depending on the severity of the croup episode, treatment options range from monitoring and evaluating symptoms to pharmacological management and possible hospital admission. This program discusses diagnosis and management of childhood croup in order for healthcare professionals to be able to effectively care for these children.
