Course overview

Discussion of pathogenesis, risk factors, and statistics for gestational diabetes; diagnosis testing protocol; 2017 Standards of Care; and treatment options. According to the CDC, up to 9.2% of pregnancies are complicated by gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and rates of gestational diabetes are rising worldwide with the increase in obesity and sedentary lifestyle. Maternal risks related to gestational diabetes include gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, cesarean delivery, and developing diabetes later in life. In addition, GDM places the fetus at risk for macrosomia, shoulder damage at birth, breathing problems, and childhood obesity. Because GDM is associated with several perinatal complications, as well as placing women with GDM and their children at increased risk of developing diabetes later in life, healthcare providers must be aware of best practices and clinical guidelines related to identification and treatment of GDM. This program discusses clinical guidelines and best practice recommendations for the identification and treatment of GDM.
