The purpose of this course is to familiarize the learner with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders and provide guidelines for the care of persons living with these diseases. Alzheimer’s disease is the most prevalent type of dementia. This course engages learners in learning about Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, stages and associated changes in communication, functional status, and behavior. The course offers strategies for interpreting behavior as communication and provides a problem-solving approach to address behavioral expressions of distress. Examples of techniques for promoting effective care techniques, independence and communication are offered throughout the course. The role of family in quality and continuity of care will be emphasized. Finally, learners will recognize the grief process as an important concern of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.
