Course overview

Target Audience: The target audience for this education program is nurses working within the emergency department who interact daily with patients with various aspects of acid-base imbalance, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, and hematological presentations. Course Overview: This course provides an overview and fast facts related the management of adults with acid-base imbalances, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, and select hematological emergencies. Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to: Interpret arterial blood gas procedures and results. Identify and implement diabetic ketoacidosis protocols. Demonstrate an understanding of the use and side effects of insulin, sodium bicarbonate, potassium, and lactated Ringer’s solution in the management of patient’s experience acid-base imbalance. Identify the general characteristics of each of the electrolyte imbalances. Identify the appropriate interventions related to electrolyte imbalances (e.g. hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, hypercalcemia, or hypomagnesemia). Explain the use and side effects of medications administered for fluid or electrolyte imbalances. Discuss the various hematological presentations. Identify the various complications that can occur with each of the hematological presentations. Compare and contrast the various hematological presentations.
