Course overview

Discusses common mental health issues seen in individuals living with HIV and AIDS, common therapeutic issues that individuals with HIV and AIDS often encounter, the role of grief and loss in people living with HIV, and methods used to build rapport and improve interactions with clients to improve delivery of care. Individuals living with HIV have an increased risk for developing mood, anxiety, and cognitive disorders, and are twice as likely to have depression compared to those who are not infected with HIV. Not only can being diagnosed with HIV lead to mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, the HIV virus itself can contribute to mental health problems because it enters and resides in your brain, leading to changes in behavior and functioning. Mental health care and treatment can have a significant, positive impact on achieving the goals of HIV care and treatment, and improve the health of people with HIV. This program discusses common mental health issues in individuals living with HIV, and how to foster positive and effective interpersonal interactions to improve delivery of care for these individuals.
