CANCER TREATMENT RELATED COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT

Course overview

Oncology professionals, nurses, neuropsychologists, and psychologists have established cancer treatment related cognitive impairment (CTRCI) as a common side-effect of cancer treatment, impacting as many as 75% of cancer survivors; yet, speech-language pathologists have been silent in establishing their role in the treatment of this phenomenon. This presentation will provide the necessary background for them to be able to do so. Clinical symptoms will be defined and therapeutic suggestions offered. A videotape will be played of a person who received speech therapy for CTRCI, talking with a person who feels she needs it. Objective Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: List at least 3 cognitive-linguistic symptoms of CTRCI ¿feeling in a fog¿, poor concentration, forgetfulness, word finding problems, high level language deficits, and impaired executive functioning skills Identify at least 2 diagnostic tests for CTRCI FACT (Cog), Mini Mental, formal neuropsych evaluations, Trail Making A & B Suggest at least 2 therapeutic strategies Provide word finding strategies, memory compensatory skills, techniques to improve time management, and patient/family education Know where to go to identify billing codes for reimbursement Know the changes in ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding; reference the resources provided by ASHA.
