FUNCTIONAL COMMUNICATION IN APHASIA: CREATING THE PATH

Course overview

This course is designed to assist medical Speech-Language Pathologists who work with clients with aphasia to begin incorporating functional communication goals and activities into their intervention no matter the site or the level of care. The concepts of functional, or purposeful, communication, treatment protocols that focus on functional communication and how to write goals that include work on functional communication will be addressed. Objective Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: Identify functional communication outcomes Identify treatment protocols/models that promote functional communication Identify strategies to incorporate functional communication into intervention at any stage of the rehabilitation continuum Apply functional outcomes into goals/objectives Additional Information This course is currently NOT registered with ASHA and therefore will not be reported to the ASHA Registry. Duration: 3 Hours CE Credit: .3 Course Level: Professional, Intermediate Timeline: 20 minutes: Review of the typical medical model of intervention with those affected by aphasia from acute care through and beyond outpatient care 40 minutes: Concepts and premises of functional communication will be reviewed by looking through the lens of the WHO-ICF model 55 minutes: Treatment protocols available to work on communication that is purposeful in nature 60 minutes: How to add to existing formats activities to promote functional communication and how to modify our goals and add to them a means for promoting using re-acquired or newly acquired skills to make communication functional. 5 minutes: Conclusion/questions
