ADVANCES IN CONCUSSION AND TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY ISSUES

Course overview

Head injuries and concussions are major issues in America today. With 3.8 million recreation-related concussions reported each year and over 150,000 head-injured veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan the importance of being up to date on the topic of concussion and TBI has never been higher. The course will explore the research and case-study evidence that will equip healthcare and allied healthcare professionals to provide more complete and appropriate treatment options and overall care for their patients. This course is a pivotal training experience for anyone concerned with helping a child or adult with concussion or TBI issues, particularly focusing on sports-related injuries. Oregon Health & Science University, the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury (DCoE), VAs National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research, and NW Eye Care Professionals have come together with leaders in the field, to present the research and interventions to treat the whole person. Objective Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: Discover how early diagnosis, early intervention and early recovery are key components in Concussion and TBI rehabilitation List areas of assessment appropriate for concussion and TBI Assess when an post-concussion victim can return to regular physical activities Describe the interdisciplinary team approach to concussion and TBI Summarize the behavior and learning issues seen in school-aged children who have suffered a traumatic brain injury or concussion Identify what types of referrals are helpful for a concussion or TBI victim Determine how to develop appropriate goals effective treatment plans Recognize and describe the symptoms of auditory processing problem Describe effective therapeutic interventions that improve cognition, vision, balance and coordination Determine when and how best to return post-concussion to regular physical , social and cognitive activities
