Course overview

Effective pain recognition and management requires an ongoing facility-wide commitment to resident comfort, to identifying and addressing barriers to managing pain, and to addressing any misconceptions that residents, families, and staff may have about managing pain. To meet the needs of the resident an appropriate plan for pain management must be developed. The Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has revised the “Interpretive Guidelines for Long-Term Care Facilities,” Tag F6979 Pain Mangement. Although the regulation does not specifically mention a particular condition, it does require that the necessary care and services be provided for each resident to attain or maintain his or her highest practicable level of well-being. Because different conditions have the potential to negatively affect a resident’s well-being, the facility is expected to provide the necessary care and services needed to improve, maintain, or prevent decline to the extent possible.
