Course overview

HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus, progressively kills or damages the cells of the body’s immune system and inhibits the body’s ability to fight infections and certain cancers. In the most advanced stages of HIV infection, AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) occurs. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates the 1.2 million people in the United States are living with HIV infection. One in five is unaware of their infection. This online course addresses HIV/AIDS, transmission and prevention of the disease, clinical management, opportunistic infections and diseases that may occur with HIV, drug treatment available, infection control procedures and exposure management.
