Course overview

A pressure ulcer is an area of skin breakdown that occurs when a patient stays in one position without relief. The constant pressure against the skin reduces the blood supply to the area, which causes the affected tissue to die. A pressure ulcer can start as a reddened area but progresses to an open sore which compromises both the tissue and blood supply to the area.
