Course overview

Patients differ in many ways. Some of these differences are due to patient illness, personality, socioeconomic class, or education, but the most profound differences may be cultural. Many health care professionals think that if they just treat each patient with respect, they will avoid most cultural problems, but that is not always the case. Knowledge of cultural customs, religions, and age specific-considerations can help prevent misunderstandings and lead to better patient care. This self-study will help health care practitioners to increase their understanding of a variety of cultures, religious beliefs and spiritual practices as well as age-appropriate care needed to better serve the needs of the individual patient within the health system.
