Course overview

Complications of diabetes mellitus are numerous. Diabetes is the number one cause of blindness in patients under the age of 40 and a common cause of blindness in patients over 40. It is also the number one cause of renal failure and limb amputation. Along with hypertension, smoking, and high cholesterol, diabetes is one of the four main risk factors for atherosclerosis, which can cause heart attack and strokes. This discussion will encompass four complications of diabetes mellitus: diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy, heart complications, and kidney disease.
