Course overview

Discusses the scope and prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV), definitions and types of IPV, and important issues. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health concern, with more than 27% of women and 11% of men in the US having experienced some form of IPV in their lifetime. There are multiple negative health impacts and other consequences associated with IPV, including physical illness, injury, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as psychological, economic, and social consequences. Costs associated with IPV are estimated to be $5.8 billion annually, with the majority of these costs for direct medical and mental health services. Children living in households with IPV are at a greater risk for mistreatment and poor health throughout the lifespan, and it is estimated that child abuse occurs in up to 50% of households with IPV. Nurses and other healthcare providers are in an optimal position to screen for IPV, as well as address at-risk behaviors for IPV, working from a preventive standpoint. This program discusses IPV, including scope, prevalence, types, causes, costs, and other important issues related to IPV.
