Course overview

Discusses statistics related to organ donation and transplantation, three pathways that may lead to potential organ and tissue donation, the collaborative effort necessary for successful organ and tissue donation, the three most common lung conditions in a potential donor, appropriate treatment and nursing interventions, common testing required in donor lung management, and potential complications that may arise during lung management. In 2017, more than 116,000 individuals were on the national organ transplant waiting list, and 20 people die each day waiting for a potentially life-saving transplant. The number of individuals awaiting organ transplant has increased substantially over the last 25 years, growing from approximately 23,000 to 119,000. Only 3 in 1,000 people die in a manner that allows for potential organ donation. Ensuring appropriate evaluation of potential organ donors, as well as successful organ management during the donation process, is crucial to maximize the number of organs available for transplant. This program discusses the components that facilitate a successful organ donation process, and considerations for successful lung management in organ donation.
