Course overview

Discussion of rapid sequence intubation including indications, review of airway anatomy and physiology, special considerations unique to the pediatric patient, intubation equipment and induction agents commonly utilized, and post-intubation care. Airway management is a critical clinical skill for healthcare providers caring for individuals who may require emergent intubation. Rapid sequence intubation (RSI) is an important technique for airway management of patients in the emergency department, and it is the preferred method to secure airways in patients who are at risk for aspiration because it results in rapid unconsciousness and paralysis. When clinically indicated, the ability to safely perform RSI is one of the most beneficial clinical skills related to airway management. RSI requires a great level of skill, training, and experience in intubation, as well as knowledge regarding the pharmacologic agents utilized during RSI. This program discusses RSI, including indications for intubation, airway anatomy, age-related considerations, intubation equipment, commonly used induction and paralytic agents, and post-intubation care.
