Target audience: The target audience for this education program is nurses who want to enhance their knowledge of HIV infection, how to prevent infection, and how to facilitate treatment following infection. Course overview: An estimated 1.1 million people are living with HIV infection in the United States. HIV infection a persistent public health problem for not only the United States but for countries throughout the world. This course provides nurses with information about the incidence and prevalence of the HIV epidemic transmission, and prevention, and current treatment options. Objectives Upon completion of the course, the learner should be able to: Describe the evolution of the HIV epidemic. Discuss the incidence and prevalence of HIV infection. Discuss the pathophysiology of HIV infection. Explain how HIV is transmitted. Identify groups at high risk for HIV infection. Explain the diagnostic process for HIV infection and AIDS. Describe opportunistic infections indicative of AIDS. Explain strategies to prevent HIV infection in healthcare workers and in the general public. Identify treatment options for HIV infection.
