Course Description: This course discusses obligations of States in offering assistance to victims, focusing on special considerations relating to child victims. Principles, guidelines, and resources to ensure the respect of human rights are discussed. There is a discussion of specific types of assistance which should be made available to victims of trafficking, including translation assistance, medical and psychological assistance, and material assistance. Considerations for the establishment of safe shelters and empowerment through effective rehabilitation, skills training, and education are discussed. Promising examples of holistic approaches to victim assistance are presented. The complicated relationship between HIV and trafficking in persons is considered, and a referral model for developed countries is presented. The course closes with a discussion of the importance of providing access to information and legal representation necessary to afford victims access to justice.
