Statement of Learning Need

Health clinicians need to be aware of the commonly prescribed diuretics used to control hypertension and edema as well as drug effect on increased urinary sodium and water excretion. Loop diuretics inhibit sodium reabsorption by acting on the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, and clinicians must be prepared to recognize and to educate patients on important aspects of loop diuretics when prescribing them. 

Course Purpose

To increase health clinician knowledge of loop diuretics, such as common indications, routes of administration, potential side effects and contraindications, notably those with warnings related to a history of chronic diseases that impact kidney function.

  

Target Audience

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Registered Nurses, and other Interdisciplinary Health Team Members.
