Target audience: The target audience for this education program is nurses who want to increase their ability to provide nursing care for clients affected by anxiety disorders. Course overview: Anxiety is an emotion that is experienced universally: Anxiety disorders are among the most commonly diagnosed mental health conditions in the United States population. It is more than probable that all nurses will, at some time in their careers, care for a patient with an anxiety disorder. The purpose of this article is to provide nurses with up-to-date information about the most common anxiety disorders, including criteria for diagnosis; differentiation of levels of anxiety; appropriate assessment and screening tools for patients that present with anxiety; communication tips for working with anxious clients; and non pharmacologic and pharmacologic treatments commonly used for anxiety. Learning objectives The purpose of this continuing education article is to educate nurses about anxiety disorders. After reading this article, the nurse will be able to: 1. Describe the prevalence and clinical presentation of anxiety in healthcare settings. 2. Discuss the DSM-5’s diagnostic criteria for common anxiety disorders. 3. Describe the assessment and screening process for anxiety disorders. 4. Discuss evidence-based treatments for anxiety disorders.
