Audience: The intended audience for this course is nurses working in settings where dietary supplements may be suggested or discussed. Course overview Dietary supplements of many types are widely used by Americans. As a result, it is likely that nurse practitioners in a variety of settings will encounter patients who use these products. The objectives of this educational program are to provide an overview of: -The regulation of nutritional supplements; -Main categories of nutritional supplements, as well as potential activities and safety concerns of common examples from each category; -Resources available to determine more detailed usage of supplements. -Evidence-based practice is summarized, where appropriate, to support the use of the supplements described. -Nursing considerations are included to further aid in the implementation of this educational program into practice. Objectives -Describe two key events responsible for the regulation of dietary supplements; -Identify three common categories of dietary supplements; -Characterize one important difference between water- and fat-soluble vitamins; -Discuss the difference between macro and micro minerals; -Name one potential liability associated with the use of herbal/botanical supplements; -Provide two theorized benefits of amino acid-based dietary supplements; -Describe a potential therapeutic use of probiotic dietary supplements; -Understand therapeutic differences between a robust seafood diet and fish oil supplementation.
