Course overview

This program reviews the physiological effects of burns on the pediatric patient. Common causes and types of burns are reviewed, as is the proper procedure for assessment and treatment. Scott Bolleter, Director of Education for San Antonio AirLife discusses the importance of keeping focused on the ABCs and to not be distracted by the emotional and graphic nature of these calls. Proper assessment and treatments of burns are illustrated. Also reviewed is the importance of pain management, fluid resuscitation and transport decision making. Scotty reviews the rule of palm versus the rule nines, and cautions against causing hypothermia in your patient. Also emphasized is the potential for these calls to be abuse related. Observing for scene clues, injury patterns and completing proper documentation is highlighted.
