Course overview

Discusses seizures and postictal care, including the four phases of a seizure, the six types of generalized seizures, common causes, and recommended treatments and postictal care. Seizures and epilepsy are both serious medical issues, and, in 2015, there were approximately 3.4 million people in the United States with epilepsy, 3 million adults and 470,000 children. There are many causes of seizures, and while any seizure is cause for concern, an individual who has a seizure does not necessarily have epilepsy. While many seizures may stop without any medical treatment, seizures that continue may be life threatening, compromising the airway and placing the individual at greater risk for further injury. It is crucial that Registered Nurses and other healthcare professionals know how to appropriately care for an individual experiencing a seizure. This program discusses seizures and postictal care, including the four phases of a seizure, the six types of generalized seizures, common causes, and recommended treatments and postictal care.
