Course overview

Discusses multiple aspects of elder abuse, including different forms of maltreatment, neglect, and exploitation, risk factors that place older adults at risk, screening methods to detect abuse, appropriate steps the nurse should take to report and/or intervene if abuse occurs, and how the complexity of conflictual family relationships can affect end-of-life care for older adults. In the state of Texas, any Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), Registered Nurse (RN), or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) whose practice includes the older adult or geriatric population is required to complete at least two contact hours in every licensure cycle beginning on or after January 1, 2014. The content must include information relating to elder abuse, including age-related memory changes and disease processes, chronic conditions, and end of life issues. The minimum two contact hours of CE may include information related to health maintenance and health promotion of the older adult or geriatric populations. A nurse may choose to complete more than one course in order to cover all content required in the rule. This program focuses on the multifaceted issue of older adult abuse and nursing response to the problem, draws attention to the correlations between elder abuse and age-related physical and cognitive changes, chronic conditions and disease processes, and discusses family dynamics at end of life.
