Target Audience: The target audience for this education program is nurses who want to enhance their ability to assess pain and facilitate pain management. Course Overview: Pain is a complex phenomenon and is experienced differently by every person. The experience of pain and the way people react to it varies with culture, age, and co-existing medical or mental health conditions. It is imperative that nurses have knowledge of the various types of pain, their physiologies, how to assess pain, and how to facilitate pain management. This education program provides an overview of pain, the physiology of pain, its impact on economic and personal status, and pain treatment. Learning Objectives: 1. Define pain according to the International Association for the Study of Pain. 2. Examine the physiology, classifications, and characteristics of acute and chronic pain. 3. Address the impact of pain on economic and personal statuses, as well as on potential prescription drug abuse. 4. Describe the requisite steps in assessing and treating pain. 5. Explore the pain management resources available for patients and/or families.
