Statement of Learning Need

Health clinicians need to know the indications, uses, contraindications and potential side effects of loxapine. While typical antipsychotic drug overdose does not generally cause life-threatening toxicity, a large overdose of loxapine can cause significant cardiac symptoms, coma, and seizures, which clinicians should be aware of when prescribing it. Loxapine can be used for all age groups, most recently revisited in the literature as appropriate for severe aggression and behavioral dysregulation.

Course Purpose

To inform health clinicians of current published information relative to basic pharmacological profile of loxapine and clinical pearls on topics that elucidate on the current research and case studies pertaining to the benefits and risk of loxapine use.

Target Audience

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Registered Nurses, and other Interdisciplinary Health Team Members.
