Course overview

Besides the usual academic presentation of bipolar disorder, this course will help individuals better attain a mindful, objective awareness of what it is like to be bipolar. This phenomenological picture will be painted by reviewing how bipolar disorder develops and presents itself (i.e., assessment and diagnosis) and impacts the individual and family as a result in changes in brain functioning and other co-occurring substance use and mental disorders. Time will be spent on pharmacological treatment and how medications affect the client and psychotherapy. Cases vignettes will be provided so that attendees have a real feel for the disorder and more ability to empathize and understand clients with whom they work.
