Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most prevalent mental disorders in America, with about half of those affected suffering a recurrent or chronic course. This in-depth presentation will describe the relationship between a primary genetic risk factor, external stressors and MDD. It will identify key stress-related changes in the brain that accompany major depression - especially recurrent and treatment-resistant forms. Understanding these changes provides the basis for advancements in treating major depression by manipulating neuroplasticity and/or the neuroendocrine stress response system. Participants will learn several non-pharmacological, contemporary approaches to the treatment of major depression based on these psychobiological principles. Please note that this is an Advanced Level course.
