Understanding and Treating Intimate Partner Violence

Course overview

This dynamic course will explore: danger signs, assessment, detection, and intervention strategies including community resourcing, cultural factors (including religion and immigration status, substance abuse, same gender abuse dynamics), and treatment. According to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey report (2010) Intimate Partner Violence in the United States remains a significant public health problem, negatively impacting millions of women and men each year. Among women and men who experienced IPV during their lifetime, more than 1 in 3 female victims and more than 1 in 7 male victims reported needing at least one type of IPV-related service in response to victimization. This course provides an opportunity to improve our knowledge and skills to effectively and appropriately address IPV, prevent future occurrences of violence, and understand complex issues such as traumatic bonding. This course will also address the impact on children witnessing IPV and appropriate strategies, as well as the impact in later life (Elderly IPV). This course will also review mandatory reporting laws and ideal protocols for your workplace.
