Course overview

While most of us consider our home a place of safety, the products we use every day and the communities in which we live can be causing our health to suffer. Common everyday items and medications can prove toxic to ourselves, our families, our pets, and the environment. In addition, the way our house and neighborhood is designed and built can either improve or degrade our health and the health of our communities. By knowing how our home and neighborhood can impact our health and knowing what is in our homes, we can empower ourselves to improve our health as well as the health of our families and our community. The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe common hazardous products in the home, how they impact health, and ways to reduce exposure to toxins in everyday life as well as identify how home and neighborhood design impacts health.
