Course overview

Thiothixene is a typical antipsychotic that has a labeled use for the treatment of patients who have schizophrenia and is used off-label for the treatment of agitation and psychosis caused by dementia. Thiothixene belongs to the class of drugs known as thioxanthenes with anticholinergic properties and was introduced into the market in 1967 under the trade name Navane and was reported by Leung (2015) to be more potent than chlorpromazine. The use of thiothixene has significantly declined in recent decades with the advent of the newer atypical antipsychotics however continues to be manufactured and used in many countries worldwide. Statement of Learning Need

Health clinicians need to know the indications, uses, contraindications and potential side effects of thiothixene. As a typical antipsychotic, thiothixene is still available for the treatment of schizophrenia and is considered more potent than chlorpromazine to treat the core symptoms of schizophrenia.

Course Purpose

To inform health clinicians of practical learning points for the use of thiothixene that clinicians can include in everyday practice, as well as the potential for side effects or overdose that may occur with thiothixene.

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Registered Nurses, and other Interdisciplinary Health Team Members.
