Course overview

Discussion of shoulder pain in older adults including shoulder anatomy, comparison between a healthy shoulder and a superiorly migrating humerus, and scapulohumeral rhythm. Identifies shoulder musculature (serratus anterior, middle trapezius muscle, latissimus dorsi) and the muscles of the rotator cuff (supraspinatus, infraspinatus and teres minor, subscapularis, and deltoid). Examines causes of shoulder impingement including bursitis, activities that cause pain, and superior migration, and severe cases of impingement. Includes assessment of shoulder injury, and exercises, protocol, and modalities used as part of a scapular stability program. Examines standardized testing such as simple shoulder test and the DASH (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand); compensatory strategies for feeding, dressing, grooming/toileting, reaching overhead, and sleeping; and case studies.
