Heart disease is the leading cause of death in men and women in the United States. In terms of survival rates involving some cardiovascular conditions, it affects women even more than men, and it is currently the number one cause of death in women. Whereas one in 9 women will die from breast cancer, one in 3 women die from a heart attack. In fact, more women die from heart disease than from all other causes combined, and more women than men die from cardiovascular disease each year. The medical literature related to the latest guidelines for healthy lifestyle choices and the prevention, treatment and procedural interventions for women diagnosed with heart disease are discussed, including the treatment benefits and risks. Statement of Learning Need
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women in the United States. While awareness among physicians and other healthcare providers has increased in recent years, there still exists a need for ongoing education and review of the most current treatment standards for cardiovascular health that will lead to improved prevention, earlier detection, and better treatment outcomes of heart disease in women.
Course Purpose
To provide all healthcare providers with knowledge necessary to increase their efforts to improve the prevention and treatment of heart disease in women.
Target Audience
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Registered Nurses, and other Interdisciplinary Health Team Members.
