Course overview

Discussion of identifying the potential for diseases and/or psychological disorders in patients with musculoskeletal complaints including watching out for any red flags misleading such as imaging results and making sure imaging correlates with exam findings. Explains the significance of obtaining the patients history of pain in the shoulder, neck, and upper extremities, the back, and lower extremities. Identifies worrisome physical exam findings for the lower extremities including gastrointestinal red flags and referred pain related to gynecological and genitourinary issues; cervical spine issues including atlantoaxial instability and thoracolumbar spine problems. Describes examples of red flags to watch for in hospital and inpatient rehabilitation settings. Examines etiologies of bone pain including endocrine, infectious including risk factors for bone infections, hematologic oncologic, referred, and traumatic. Examines sites and risk factors for stress fractures as well as risk factors for osteoporosis and gait abnormalities. Discusses the importance of the patients psychosocial evaluation and the significance of watching for yellow flags.
