Florida 8-hour Laws & Rules for Initial Licensure

• Describe the ethical and legal requirements for mental health professionals as outlined in Florida law and ethical codes
• Identify the causes and common types of ethical issues that can arise in a therapeutic relationship
• Define the core competencies of a mental health professional along with the steps that the practitioner should take to maintain competence
• Define cultural competence and the role that it plays in the therapeutic relationship
• Define confidentiality and informed consent along with any limits to these concepts within the therapeutic relationship
• Identify the requirements for mandated reporting of child or elder abuse
• Discuss the issues and dynamics of dual and sexual relationships between therapists and clients
• Outline the steps for assessing and reducing suicide risk
• Discuss the importance of recognizing when psychiatric symptoms are medical in origin

• Contrast the prevalence of HIV in the US with that of Sub-Saharan Africa
• Contrast the exposure categories for men and women in the US
• Discuss antiretroviral medications and adherence
• Describe post-exposure prophylaxis for occupational exposure to HIV and nonoccupational exposure to HIV

Domestic Violence: An Update for Mental Health Professionals

• Define domestic violence
• Describe the various categories of domestic violence
• Identify underlying motivating factors that contribute to domestic violence
• Describe the prevalence of domestic violence in the United States
• Describe common characteristics of both domestic violence victims and perpetrators
• Identify common warning signs of domestic violence
• Describe ways in which a mental health professional may raise the subject of domestic violence with a patient
• Identify the role of the mental health professional in reporting domestic violence
