Course overview
The nonmedical use or abuse of prescription drugs is a serious and growing public health problem. However, we now know more about the scope and magnitude of the problem, including how the drugs produce their desired effects and why they are so attractive to some users and abusers. The purpose of this course is to present information that the National Institute on Drug Abuse has accumulated from years of scientific research in order to better understand prescription drug abuse and addiction. The course presents information on what some of the most commonly used prescription drugs are, how they work in the brain, negative effects of abuse, and treatment interventions. Sources of additional relevant information are also included.
