Reflux: Diagnosis and Evidence Based Treatments provides an overview of the normal function of the UES, LES, esophagus as well as changes that occur in these structures that contribute to reflux. Numerous factors contribute to reflux - diet, behaviors such as smoking, medications, and an overview of specific diseases/disorders that predispose the patient to problems with the UES, LES and esophagus. The types of reflux will be discussed as well as specific symptoms for each. Specific tests may be recommended to diagnose reflux - each will be discussed as well as the pros and cons for the test. Once a diagnosis is reached, treatments could include pharmacology as well as surgical or endoscopic treatments. The literature discusses evidence based treatments and outcomes. Each will be discussed as well as the outcomes. The speech pathologists role in the treatment of reflux will be identified.
