Course overview

Discussion of immunization recommendations for HIV+ patients including identifying which patients are eligible for vaccination, which vaccines are appropriate depending on a patients CD4+ count, how to discuss vaccine specifics with patients prior to vaccination, and recommendations on vaccination to physicians on a patient-specific basis. Vaccinations are helpful in protection from diseases such as influenza, chicken pox, polio, and measles, among many others. While there is not a vaccine to protect individuals from HIV, individuals who are HIV+ can benefit from being vaccinated for many diseases. There are multiple factors to take into consideration regarding vaccination of HIV+ patients, such as age, previous vaccinations, comorbidities and risk factors for diseases, the patients CD4+ count, and other certain HIV related factors. Because HIV infection and treatment may alter the safety and effectiveness of certain vaccines, it is essential for the healthcare provider to have a solid understanding of all the factors that must be taken into consideration when vaccinating these individuals. This program discusses vaccination recommendations for HIV+ individuals, including vaccine types, factors affecting vaccine response, and considerations for international travel.
