Course overview

Discussion of the fundamentals of dementia care for health facility personnel, including the diagnostic process of dementia, the stages of the disease, and how it affects the brain; the characteristics of person-centered care for people with dementia and the strategies for implementation; strategies for verbal and non-verbal communication with people with dementia including techniques for promoting meaningful communication; how and why some behaviors become challenging, ways to prevent certain behaviors, techniques for responding to challenging behaviors, and strategies for participation in activities of daily living (ADLs); and ways to empathize with the person with dementia and their families, including identifying resources, and strategies for building positive relationships.
