Course overview

This course consists of two chapters from A Providers Introduction to Substance Abuse Treatment for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Individuals. Clinical Issues With Lesbians (Chapter 7) will help providers learn about the range of diversity among women who see themselves as lesbians or whose sexual/emotional/affectional feelings and behavior are primarily directed toward women. This chapter will cover the myths and stereotypes about lesbians that need to be explored and corrected, the clinical issues and concerns specific to lesbian clients, and how counselors need to respond to issues specific to lesbians who are substance abusers. Clinical Issues With Gay Male Clients (Chapter 8) will explain the social, cultural, psychological, and developmental issues and treatment considerations specific to gay men and cover some of the societal, cultural, and emotional factors and expectations with which gay males must contend.
