Course overview

Healthcare providers must understand and be vigilant about the prevention of infection and the control of infectious diseases. Hand hygiene campaigns and an emphasis on infection control education with required updates have been implemented in all types of healthcare settings. This course provides content related to the most current standards in accordance with national, state, and agency guidelines. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, the student will master the following objectives: 1.Define terminology related to infection prevention and control. 2.Discuss the process of infectious disease, including the source of infectious agents, modes of transmission, host susceptibility, and stages of infection. 3.Discuss common healthcare-associated infections, including risk factors for development of these infections, and organisms causing these infections. 4.Discuss the term multiple drug-resistant organism, including the effect of these infectious agents on infection prevention and control. 5.Outline types of bloodborne pathogens and how they spread in healthcare settings. 6.Discuss the role of national agencies in maintaining public health and security. 7.Describe how infection control prevention concepts are applied in professional practice. 8.Discuss immunization programs in place in the United States and the role these programs play in infection prevention and control.
